TikTok Algorithm: How does TikTok’s algorithm work?

What is the TikTok algorithm?

It is known as the algorithm on TikTok that gets to know users’ preferences when it comes to videos, certainly it wants to make more accurate recommendations. The For You Page is the place where the algorithm will show the videos for each person. No FYP is the same as the other one, as the personalization is so specific in each case.

The main objective of TikTok is show the users content they are interested in watching or even in creating, so the company also tries to avoid spam or irritating commercial that could cause the people to leave the app.

Three main aspects are taken into consideration by the algorithm on TikTok when it comes to showing content, setting, video information and users’ interactions.

How does it work?

  • Settings

Settings don’t have as much impact as as information and interactions because they are not frecuently changed as the other aspects of the videos on TikTok. Regardless some of the aspects taken into consideration by the algorithm are:

  • Language
  • Country
  • Categories the user is interested in
Representation of the settings on the app and the different options in them.
  • Information

The FYP on TikTok personalizes the videos based on the content the algorithm identifies you look for on the Search bar, then it tries to show content with similar key words or topics. Some elements it tries to match are:

  • Captions
  • Sounds
  • Hashtags
  • Effects
The app in someone's phone and all the options to edit the video like adding words and captions.
  • Interactions

Thirdly your For You Page on TikTok recommends you videos based on factor like:

  • The accounts you follow
  • Your comments
  • Videos you like or save
  • What you mark as “not interested”
  • The long you watch videos
  • More aspects

The algorithm is designed to learn from you and get to know you to a point where it can show you videos more suited for you. In that aspect TikTok has significantly one of the more efficient algorithms we have seen this last decade. 

The comment section on a video where different points of view about the video are being discussed.
